October in Boston, 2013

image

October in Boston and the Sox are hot
And nearing Fenway the curbstones are bulging
With ticket-holders in matching caps and jackets

And when the walksigns go white                                                                                   The crowds commence to stretch again                                                                        Leaves crunching under them like cornflakes—

Block by block a great accordion heave of people                                                      Moving together in red and navy blue                                                                               As beautifully as will their exalted ballteam

October

Sharp shadows in late afternoon
Sky of serene, yes, immaculate
So blue, so blue
I cry

And the leaves whispering in the breeze
Ablaze already, yes, burning
So red, so red
I die

On the Best Nights

On the Best Nights

On the best nights
Drumming is like chopping
At a large hardwood
With a very sharp axe

The weighted blade biting nicely
And the clean heat
Of humming muscles
And nothing else

While the streets of Austin were packed with people at SXSW we, as well as the folks from Annie Street Arts Collective, took refuge underground with our instruments. They filmed it. Mixed it. Edited it. From somewhere under Texas, here is Pigeon Feathers.

Chainlink

Chainlink

The chainlink gate plinks, swings, and clatters closed
Delivering me to the schools and
Neighborhood pools of my youth.
The comings and goings of boyhood
In that far-away life of bicycles and backyard shortcuts.

Gate-by-gate I go clattering back
Into those pens of memory
Each of them a world entire, huge and new,
Each experience so sweet,
Like a bag of candy, a cold soda, the cling
Of honeysuckle to my skin.

Plinking, swinging, clattering closed
To expose the irrevocable
With a half-pleasant sting,
Like the whiskey
I pour now into my sodas.
It expands a little the shrunken world of adulthood,
Brings back the silliness,
Sweetening in a grown-up way the pain of all this passing.

Pittsburgh

In Pittsburgh steel bridges
Span the riverbanks
Like rust-colored rainbows

And distance has hidden their separated lanes
So that for an instant I consider
The furious convergence of two oncoming trucks

But when the moment comes
One truck only disappears behind the other
In a smooth illusion of singularity

Before the one becomes two again
And they diverge now like miracles
Moving minuscule and inglorious
